Half-way to St. Pats Celebration at The Stone Church

We’ve often spoken about what a great camaraderie there is within the music community around the Seacoast – and with the Irish music community in particular. Well, we’ve got a great example of that happening on Friday, September 16, as we’ll be joining forces with our friends in The Tom Lanigan Band for a special half-way to St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.

This special event, which will be held at The Stone Church in Newmarket, NH, is the brainchild of Tom Lanigan and Reagh Greenleaf. They were planning a half-way to St. Pats show, but they wanted to expand it beyond just their band. They instantly thought of òran mór, since we have a mutual admiration of each others’ acts, we sit-in with each other once in awhile, and we’ve been wanting to do a double-bill sometime.

We’re thrilled that “sometime” is now going to be Sept. 16.

The doors open at 6 p.m. The gameplan for the evening is that òran mór will play for the first part of the night (7 p.m.). Then Tom, Reagh, Sue Young, and Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki will take the stage (9 p.m.). We’ll close the night with a big ol’ jam together.

Tickets are $10 each, but here’s the thing: Only 100 tickets will be sold.

Reagh Rah!

Well… quite a party it was! Reagh Greeneaf’s last appearance (for a while) with the Tom Lanigan Band at RiRa in Portsmouth raised the roof last night.

Many good friends stopped by to have a pint and a few laughs with Reagh and to give him the Wednesday night part of his Earth Walk sendoff.

Some of us got pulled up on the stage for various songs and shenanigans

As you probably know, Reagh’s Earth Walk across the US, to raise environmental awareness and promote ecological sustainability, will start this Sunday, May 1st at 9:30 at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point, Rye.

Many of us will join him again there for the ‘real’ sendoff. Learn more about Reagh’s trip at his website.

For now, the memory of last night’s fun will ring on for a good while….

Normally, I like to warm-up the reader with a joke or a tale, but today I’m getting right to the point…NO TIME TO WASTE! Dave and I are going to be blessed with two guests tonight (6/28) when we play RiRa’s in Portsmouth.

The Lovely and Talented...

First up, our long-time friend and talented musical companion Sue Young will be joining us at the table tonight. She’s one of our favorite bodhran players to play with, and she’s got a lovely selection of songs with the voice to match! Tonight, it’s not òran mór…it’s su and mor!

Also, there’s a lad from Clare named Mark who is working this summer at RiRa, and by all accounts he’s quite the fiddle player (apparently he tore up the Sunday session a couple of weeks ago). He promised to bring his fiddle tonight to sit in for a bit…and we can’t wait for some savage tunes!

So come on by, get out of the humidity and have a jar…should be a rare auld night.

‘Tis the season

With Christmas approaching, we’ve been throwing in a few holiday songs into the mix. Some are songs we’ve sung for years. Others are relatively new. This year, I decided it was time to learn a modern classic — “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl.

In doing a little homework, I came across a fantastic documentary that the BBC did about “Fairytale” which as been posted on YouTube. The hour-long show is posted in six 10-min chunks…definitely worth watching.

Hope you’ll come out to RiRa’s tomorrow and will shout back “Well so could anyone” as we give “Fairytale” it’s last run before Christmas.

BTW, I tried recruiting our friend Sue Young to sing Kirsty McColl’s part in “Fairytale,” but unfortunately her schedule this fall didn’t allow us to rehearse too much. While I’ve been doing the song solo, Sue will be joining us at RiRa tomorrow, so I may have the lyrics printed for her to jump into Kirsty’s role.

Our good friend, and oft-times musical cohort, Susan Young gave a great performance and session-after at Blue in Portland last night.

Sue nicely built the momentum during the evening, starting a capella, playing some tunes with Chris Stevens, and then moving to songs (with yours truly and then Michel Jenneau) and more tunes, with most of Boghat (to be fair.. Jamie wasn’t there).

She brought it around full circle to end with a pair of a capella songs. The crowd, which happened to include Paddy Keenan, loved it.

We had a great session afterward, where, for a few fleeting moments, we all saw ‘another side of Tom Rota.’ Put the cash in a plain brown envelope, Tom.

Well, it took a week to recover, but on behalf of the lads I want to say THANK YOU to all the friends that came out to see us play around the St. Patrick’s Day holiday this year. We had a blast with gigs at Kelley’s Row in Dover and a marathon session at McMenemy’s in Porstmouth. Thanks to Kelley’s and McM’s for having us, and thanks to you for coming out and supporting live music!

If you missed the festivities, check out some of the photos that Beth Therriault took of us during our Sunday show at Kelley’s Row. She’s a great photog that specializes in events and weddings – and she offered to capture a few shots of òran mór in action. Hey, she’s so talented she makes us look good.

And a special thanks to our friend, the lovely and talented Sue Young, who stepped up on Tuesday to cover for Dave at the noontime gig. She was great, and now we have the makings of a new super group — sú & mór!

St. Patrick’s Events at Kelley’s Row

Building on last year’s success, òran mór takes the stage just a bit after noon. Kelley’s Row is the heart of County Dover and the Irish tradition on this special day. We loved the enthusiastic audience last year, and we look forward to another good party.

We’ll be playing a ‘get ready’ party there on Sunday, March 15th — now there’s a way to get a real running start on the marathon week!

Susan Young, our good friend and super Irish singer and player, will join us at noon on the 17th – so you’ll get an added treat. Expect some very special vocals, and Sue’s melodic and driving drum.
